Girl with the Kundan Earrings - Shubhangi Atre Poorey

Home  Pitara  Collections Girl with the Kundan Earrings - Shubhangi Atre Poorey

She may have portrayed the perfect “Kasturi” or the not so perfect “Trishna” but Shubhangi has won our hearts with her grace, poise and ethereal beauty. Imagine my excitement when I discovered that she is absolutely crazy about earrings and has quite a collection.  What follows is fun girlie gupshup as Shubhangi lets us take a peek into her earring pitaara and we marvel at her collection!

Can you tell us a bit about your collection of earrings? Since when have you been collecting?

I am completely crazy about all kinds of earrings but I have a particular fondness for long earrings. Wherever I go, I make it a point to buy earrings. I love Kundan and Polki work so when I went to Jaipur, I picked up lots of pieces. In fact I was in a tribal district in MP and picked up lots of earrings from there as well. Even when I was a little girl, I used to adore earrings.

Do you prefer modern or traditional designs?

Hmmmm, that depends on my attire. If I wear western clothes, I’ll wear modern earrings to go with it and then of course traditional pieces with saris, lehengas, chudidars etc. So it all depends on my mood and what I wear.

What catches your eye when you see an earring? Is there anything in particular that makes you pick up a piece?

Anything with Pearls and colored stones catch my eye. I can’t resist buying an earring with a beautiful setting of colored stones.

Do you prefer long earrings or studs?

I prefer long hanging earrings and I feel they suit my face. I have a round face so long earrings give my face some definition.

Can you tell us a bit about the most unusual pair you have bought? Where did you buy it?

Ummmm…actually yes. I had seen a pair of Kashmiri earrings and I absolutely fell in love with them. When I saw the design I begged my jewellery designer to replicate the piece for me. They have a gorgeous antique look, traditional Kashmiri pattern in Kundan and Pearls and I absolutely love them. Unfortunately, I have not had an opportunity to wear them yet so I have kept them very carefully…waiting for a special occasion to wear them.

Do you usually buy earrings in accordance with the clothes in your wardrobe or do you prefer to mix and match your clothes and earrings?

I do mix and match because I have a huge collection of earrings. When we shoot, our costume designer puts together a collection of clothes and accessories in accordance with the character’s style. For example, as Kasturi or as Trishna all the clothes and earrings were based on how those particular character’s dress. So, we are offered a nice collection and I select which piece to wear.

What has been your most impulsive buy?

I was in London for a show. Out shopping I saw a very unusual pair, in fact I had never seen a design like that in India and they were quite expensive but I thought, “pataa nahi kal ho na ho” and decided to indulge myself and bought them.

Is there a pair that you consider lucky? Something you wear when you have a big event or audition etc?

Yes, of course. I am quite superstitious about all these things. About 6-7 years ago I auditioned for Balaji and I wore a particular “Kurti” and earrings (Black and Orange pattern) for the audition. I have kept those earrings very very carefully and even today, if I have an important meeting, I try to match them with my clothes and wear them.
